Test for Nicotine Dependence

The Fagerström test for nicotine dependence is a reference tool for assessing smoking addiction. This test consists of 6 questions related to smokers’ daily habits. It is used as a reference to establish smoking cessation programs.
1 - How soon after you wake up do you smoke your first cigarette?
  • Within 5 minutes
  • Within 6-30 minutes
  • Within 31-60 minutes
  • After 60 minutes
2 - How many cigarettes per day do you smoke?
  • 10 or less
  • 11-20
  • 21-30
  • 31 or more
3 - Do you find it difficult to refrain from smoking in places where it is forbidden (e.g., in church, at the library, in cinema, etc)?
  • Yes
  • No
4 - Do you smoke more during the first hours after waking than during the rest of the day?
  • Yes
  • No
5 - Which cigarette would you hate most to give up?
  • The first one in the morning
  • Any other
6 - Do you smoke even when you are ill enough to be in bed most of the day?
  • Yes
  • No
